Man in chase identified

A man who stole a car at gunpoint, shot at Phoenix police officers and then led them on a chase that ended with his suicide broadcast on national television was identified Saturday as a wanted felon with a long criminal history. Jodon F. Romero, 33, was wanted for violating his parole for a weapons conviction and had numerous other violent crimes in his background, police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said. At the end of an hourlong pursuit on an interstate west of Phoenix Friday, Romero pulled into the desert and an officer shot at him, although it appears he missed, Thompson said. Romero then walked off the dirt road, put a gun to his head and killed himself.

Actor confirms affair

Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed that he had a “hot affair” with actress Brigitte Nielsen at a time he and Maria Shriver were dating and already living together. Schwarzenegger and Nielsen co-starred in the 1985 film Red Sonja. Nielsen wrote in a memoir published last year that she and Schwarzenegger had an “outrageous affair” while making the movie and that she didn’t know until later that he was involved with Shriver. In his memoir Total Recall, coming out Monday, Schwarzenegger writes that he and Nielsen did indeed have a “hot affair,” but he knew it wouldn’t last. In fact, their “fling” only made him realize that he wanted to marry Shriver.

Lottery winner dead

Police say a Detroit-area woman who collected welfare benefits despite winning a $735,000 lottery prize has died of a possible drug overdose. Ecorse police Sgt. Cornelius Herring confirmed that 25-year-old Amanda Clayton was found dead about 9 a.m. Saturday at a home in the community southwest of Detroit. Relatives of Clayton did not immediately return a phone message for comment. Clayton of Lincoln Park pleaded no contest to fraud in June and was sentenced to nine months’ probation in July. Her attorney has said Clayton repaid about $5,500 in food aid and medical benefits. Michigan’s Department of Human Services says Clayton didn’t inform the state about her pre-tax lottery windfall.
