Deputy killed; 2 officers shot

A gunman with an assault rifle shot and killed a California sheriff’s deputy and wounded two other officers Wednesday at a Sacramento hotel that was later surrounded by officers searching for suspects. Three people, including the man suspected of killing the deputy, were in custody following a chase in a stolen car that led to the hotel. Guests at the hotel were told to shelter in place. Police later said no other suspects were found in the hotel. Robert French, a 21-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, died on the way to a hospital from a gunshot wound to his side, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said. The bullet appeared to go into his chest cavity, he said.

Judge asked to drop charges

Lawyers for members of a now-closed Penn State fraternity asked a district judge Wednesday to dismiss some or all of the charges related to a pledge’s death, arguing their clients didn’t act recklessly or maliciously during a night of drinking and hazing. The sixth day of a preliminary hearing wrapped up with attorneys for 11 of the 17 defendants still waiting to make final arguments before a judge will decide whether to send charges to county court for trial.

Dinosaur fossil discovered

A dinosaur fossil has been discovered in Colorado by construction workers. The bones and skull of a triceratops were found last Friday in Thornton at the construction site of a new public safety building. Denver Museum of Nature and Science curator of dinosaurs Joe Sertich says the find is one of three triceratops skulls found along the Colorado Front Range and has likely been laying there for at least 66 million years. A horn and shoulder blade has been unearthed so far by crews working to uncover the fossil. Triceratops had two big horns over its eyes and a smaller nose horn.

How alligator got in pool

Authorities have solved the mystery of how an alligator ended up in a swimming pool at a motel on the New Jersey shore. They say the 3-foot-long alligator found Aug. 15 at the Bayview Inn & Suites in Atlantic City was part of a rap video filmed there by two men. The alligator was found when police conducted a raid at the site. Items found during the raid led to the arrest Tuesday of the two men on armed robbery charges. Authorities say they robbed homes in two nearby towns in the days before the alligator was found.
