Squishy yards and parks? There’s a reason.

Rainfall on the last day of October pushed the Akron-Canton area into the top 10 wettest Octobers in about 120 years of record-keeping.

Preliminary data Thursday evening showed Akron-Canton Airport had received about 5 inches of precipitation for the month, topping 4.8 inches in October 1995, which was 10th in the record book. The wettest October was 8.42 inches in 1954.

What’s even more notable is that this would be the third consecutive year that October has made the top 10 list.

Last year, it was 5.29 inches for eighth place; in 2011, 5.02 inches, ninth.

Anything else unusual? By this time of year, we’ve usually had almost a half-inch of snow, but we’ve received only a trace — the result of slightly warmer temperatures.

The near-term outlook from the National Weather Service: Windy and a high of 60 today, then wet Saturday and cooler than normal through the weekend.
