PAULDING, OHIO: A judge in northwestern Ohio has rejected a request to declare a mistrial in the case against a man accused of killing his former wife in 1981.

The trial of 59-year-old Steven Noffsinger of Defiance began this week in Paulding County.

He was charged with aggravated murder in the death of Alma Noffsinger after authorities reopened the case with the help of the television show “Cold Justice.”

The Crescent-News in Defiance reports that defense attorneys asked for a mistrial Tuesday after a former sheriff’s deputy discussed crime scene and investigation notes that the prosecutors and defense didn’t know about.

Defense attorney William Kluge said in his opening statements that there’s no evidence linking Noffsinger to the killing. Prosecutors said Noffsinger was jealous and angry with his ex-wife.
