HAMILTON, OHIO: A Southwest Ohio teen has earned a national honor for rescuing a Miami University student who was struggling to keep from drowning in a state lake.

Sixteen-year-old Zachary Mortenson of Seven Mile is among 23 recipients this year of the Carnegie Medal for extraordinary heroism. He spotted Miami University student Dane Sapp in trouble on Acton Lake in Hueston Woods State Park last June.

Mortenson swam out about 360 feet, held onto and supported Sapp and brought him back to shore safely.

Sapp says he was exhausted and was barely able to keep treading water when Mortenson arrived.

Mortenson says he regularly goes swimming and boating at the lake. He tells the JournalNews of Hamilton he would do the same thing again if he saw someone in trouble.
