BEREA: A record number of vehicles traveled on the Ohio Turnpike last year.

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission said a total of 55.2 million vehicles used the toll highway, up from 54.9 million the previous year.

The 241-mile turnpike, which travels across northern Ohio, also saw the number of fatalities due to crashes drop to six, down from 12 the previous year.

“With our continued focus on safety and efficiency, it’s especially satisfying to see a significant decline in fatalities and an increase in our free-flowing traffic,” Executive Director Randy Cole said in a prepared statement. “Our customers expect a better way to travel without delays and we look forward to exceeding expectations again in 2018.”
