COLUMBUS: A judge says a 72-year-old man isnít competent to stand trial for murder in the fatal stabbing of his wife of 50 years at their central Ohio home.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the judge decided Leif Mortensen isnít competent for trial because he has dementia and canít understand the charges or help his defense.

Police say Mortensen called 911 about his wifeís death Feb. 13 and tried to cut his own throat. He told a dispatcher heíd never hurt his wife before and didnít know why he did it. He told officers he hadnít been drinking or taking drugs.

The newspaper says prosecutors are expected to present evidence at an October hearing and ask the court to continue supervising Mortensen. Then a judge could decide where heíll be placed.
