JACKSON TWP.: Stark State College trustees have approved plans for a new $1.3 million shale drilling training lab to train oil and natural gas workers.

The indoor-outdoor facility at Third Street and Cherry Avenue Southeast in downtown Canton is expected to be ready by next fall, college President Para M. Jones said.

“This lab will provide students with hands-on learning experiences, much like those they would experience in the field or on oil rigs,” she said.

The parcel was purchased in June for $179,900 and is within one block of the planned Stark State Downtown Canton Satellite Center and Energy Institute that is scheduled to open in January 2015 at 400 Third St. SE.

The college will build a 7,000-square-foot facility for the ShaleNET training.
