RAVENNA: Portage County commissioners on Thursday approved tax breaks for a Newell Rubbermaid facility planned for the Brimfield/Tallmadge joint economic development district.
The $42.4 million project is expected to bring 79 full-time jobs.
Commissioners approved a seven-year property tax abatement in the amount of 60 percent the first year, 50 percent the next two years, 40 percent the following two years, and 30 percent in years six and seven.
The deal already has been approved by Brimfield Township and the Portage County Port Authority. The affected schools — the Field district and Maplewood Career Center — have been notified.
The project developer, InSite Real Estate, is planning to construct a 811,000-square-foot facility in the Commerce Industrial Park. Newell Rubbermaid then would lease the building.
Newell Rubbermaid plans to purchase and install $16 million in new machinery and inventory. The project is in support of its expansion taking place in Mogadore.
