LITCHFIELD TWP.: Medina County and state health department officials have confirmed finding a rabid bat in Medina County.

The bat was found in a residence Wednesday near Litchfield Circle at state Routes 18 and 83, the county reported Thursday.

There was a potential for exposure to people and pets, the agency said.

In the past, a rabies case has occurred every one to three years in Medina County, but this is the third rabid bat found in the county in 2013. One was found in the city of Medina in mid-March, the other in Brunswick on May 16.

Rabies are common in bats, with up to 5 percent testing positive.

Health experts advise keeping bats out of houses and bedrooms. If a bat is in the house, do not release it bat back to the wild; have it captured and call the county health department at 330-723-9523 or 888-723-9688.
