Police crews searched Sunday evening for a 13-year-old boy they fear drowned in Chippewa River while swimming with his friends.

Rittman police said at about 2:45 p.m., a male started to flag down motorists to get help on Milton Road near state Route 57.

Emergency personnel from Rittman Police and Fire departments and EMS responded to the scene along with other assistance.

An off-duty officer helped search the creek in his kayak, and an air support and a dive team were also called to assist.

Police said additional personnel from other local agencies also helped with the effort that lasted at least four hours.

As of 7:30 p.m., there was no update on the missing boy. His two friends are safe, police said.
