Barberton school board members voted unanimously Monday night to proceed with auctions for two properties that the board owns: Portage Elementary School and Memorial Elementary School.

“This is a required step by law and we must offer them up for auction, and as part of that requirement we must advertise that auction,” Ryan Pendleton, district treasure/chief financial officer, said.

Board members are not required to accept any offers that come out of the auctions. Pendleton said he has not determined a date for the auctions.

The Portage property on Wooster Road was appraised at $400,000, though the cost to demolish or renovate the building would cost about $1.2 to $1.4 million because of asbestos in the building.

The Memorial property on Summit Street was appraised at $100,000.
