Stow-Munroe Falls School Board approved a four-year contract of Superintendent Russell Jones in a 4-1 vote at Tuesday night's board meeting.
Jones contract is due for renewal in March 2013.
Board member Rod Armstrong voted against the contract renewal.
“We have until March 2013 to renew the contract, and we are going to vote on it tonight,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong said that he received the information packet regarding the contract renewal last Thursday.
“Besides the meeting tonight, were we able to start the inquiry into the contract and for that reason I cannot support this contract,” Armstrong said.
Board member Dick Spangler said that he also had the same time frame as Armstrong to review the contract.
“I understand what some of your problems were, but we have answered them,” Spangler said. “I see nothing wrong with doing this ahead of time because the longer that we pull this thing apart, the shorter time frame. I don’t want to see Dr. Jones go some place.”
Spangler said he would like to see Jones stay in Stow for four more years.
“It is common courtesy in the world of contracting and the school business world that you give your administrator that vote of confidence or at least give them the chance to go and find employment elsewhere,” board member Karen Wright said.
Board member Fred Bonacci said that waiting until March to renew the contract would be unfair to Jones.
“We risk the uncertainty of his future here and cause him to maybe look elsewhere or for other schools to look at him,” Bonacci said.
Bonacci said getting another superintendent for the district would end up costing the district a lot more than what they are paying for Jones today.
Jones has frozen his salary through Aug. 1, 2013.
