Summit County is boosting the amount of money it earmarks for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.

County Council has approved another $100,000 for the nonprofit, bringing this year’s total to $300,000. The money will allow the food bank to buy additional food for distribution to food pantries throughout Summit County.

“We are very proud of the partnership we have with the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank,” Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro said in a prepared statement. “One in seven individuals throughout Summit County struggles with food insecurity. Providing meals to people in need lessens the burden of choosing between food and other essentials like medication.”

The Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank provides food and necessities to hunger-relief programs in Summit, Carroll, Holmes, Media, Portage, Stark, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties.
