Summit and Stark counties will receive a combined $1.4 million in federal funding to assess and clean brownfield sites.
The Northeast Ohio Four County Regional Planning and Development Organization will use $600,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to prepare for the eventual cleanup of contaminated land at former industrial and commercial properties in Summit County.
In Stark County, the Regional Planning Commission was awarded $600,000 for an assessment coalition, and the Stark County Park District was awarded $200,000 for the cleanup of Molly Stark Park.
The park sits on the grounds of the former Molly Stark Hospital.
“Ohio’s brownfield sites can be opportunities for redevelopment and new growth,” U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown said in announcing the funding.
