A Columbus man has been arrested in connection with the July rape of an Akron teenager.

James Winchester, 25, was arrested Wednesday at his Columbus home. He was being held in the Franklin County Jail on rape and kidnapping charges.

Police accuse Winchester of giving a ride to a 17-year-old girl at about 2 a.m. on July 7. They drove from Copley Road to Mercer Avenue, where police say the girl was sexually assaulted and then forced out of the car.

Police say DNA evidence was used to identify Winchester as a suspect.

The case was investigated by Akron and Columbus police, the U.S. Marshal’s Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Fugitive Task Force in Columbus.
