CANAL FULTON: A motorist who allegedly smashed into a mailbox and catch basin last week tried to outwit police by leaving a note on the damaged and inoperable car.

The driver abandoned the vehicle about 700 feet from the accident with a note saying: “Be back soon. Power steering went out.”

It apparently wasn’t too difficult to match the damage to the car to the accident scene.

The crash, which occurred May 24 at Summer Evening Drive and Elm Ridge Avenue, was captured on video and police posted it on the department’s Facebook page. The driver, who wasn’t identified, was cited for hit/skip and failure to control.
