WAYNE TWP.: After six consecutive days of record-breaking 90-degree temperatures, it finally felt like autumn had arrived Friday night, and Bryan Fishburn and his friends celebrated with a bonfire and cookout.

Afterward, just before 10 p.m., Fishburn and seven of his friends piled into an SUV and headed for home south along Friendsville Road in Wayne County near the Medina County line.

“Next thing I know, we were starting to swerve really hard, and then we hit the edge of the road and we started flipping, flipping four or five times,” Fishburn, 18, of Wooster, recalled Saturday from Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he remained hospitalized with a broken collarbone and a compound fracture in his back.

State troopers said the driver of the SUV — Kristine Hutchison, 22, of Wooster — was killed, along with passenger Alex Collett, a 16-year-old from Creston, who described himself on his Facebook page as an artist, poet and musician who went to Norwayne High School.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, troopers said, but they did not speculate why the SUV, a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer, left the road.

Passenger Kayla Edwards, 16, of Wooster, was taken by medical helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she was joined by passengers Lindsey Laney, 15, of West Salem, and Kayleigh Cabell, 15, of Sterling, who made the trip by ambulance.

Tyson Woodruff, 13, of Wooster, was sent to Wooster Community Hospital. He told friends on Facebook he had a black eye and seven staples holding his scalp together.

And Lucille Edwards, 36, of Wooster, was apparently treated at the scene. Troopers did not list her as being hospitalized.

The crash remains under investigation.
