MOGADORE: Johnathan Ardelian is looking forward to the next time he sees a village policeman. He’s going to point to the patch on the officer’s shoulder and proudly announce that he designed it.
Jonathan, 8, entered his design, which will be used to revamp the department’s logo, as part of a writing prompt that third-grade teachers at O.H. Somers Elementary developed. The homework project, which new Chief Todd Higgins commissioned, required students to design and describe a police insignia that would adorn uniforms.
Since replacing retired police Chief David Fowler in August, Higgins has been going about the mundane task of taking inventory and putting some things in order.
Finding a new look for the Police Department has been a welcome change, he said.
Since he joined the Mogadore force in 1991, Higgins has worn the same patch: an eagle carrying a star-spangled shield.
“I don’t think they have ever been changed. So it’s kind of neat to have a third-grader put his work on it,” Higgins said after presenting Johnathan’s winning design to the elementary school Monday.
The new logo, an eagle soaring over iconic Grist Mill, symbolizes officers’ readiness to protect and serve the community, according to its designer, who wants nothing more than to become a police officer when he grows up.
“He has always wanted to be in law enforcement his whole life,” his mother, Jenifer Ardelian, said.
Johnathan’s desire to serve has a lot to do with his uncle, a State Highway Patrol trooper, and his beloved grandfather, a retired Akron police officer who passed away last year.
“He did everything with his grandfather,” Jenifer Ardelian said. “They were very close.”
When asked why he wanted to serve, Jonathan gave a reason less noble than civic duty, but a response to be expected of any third-grader.
“I really think it’s cool to be driving a car and capture people who are speeding and tell them they are driving too fast,” Johnathan said, smiling and holding up the new logo.
