Wadsworth has rolled out another program to promote energy efficiency and energy conservation.

Known as Right Time Pricing, the program is designed to encourage those who opt into it voluntarily to use electricity at "off-peak" times to reduce the amount charged per kilowatt-hour. The price of electricity is higher during "peak hours" and lower during "off-peak" hours.

Service Director Chris Easton said the program is up and running. Both residential and business customers can use the program.

Assistant Service Director Harry Stark told City Council's Economic Development and Planning Committee the goal is to save 4,000 megawatt hours of electricity within a three-year period. However, Stark explained, after two years with the Efficiency Smart program, the city already projects the saving to be 5,300 hours, and there is still another year to go.

Stark said a lot of businesses have benefited from the savings from the investments they have made.

Right Time Pricing divides the energy year into three periods: October through May, June through September and July through August

From October through May, peak hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Off-peak hours are 8 p.m. to 10 a.m.

From June through September, peak hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Off-peak hours are 8 p.m. to 10 a.m.

From July through August, peak hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Off-peak hours are 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. In the summer, peak hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Changes an user can make, according to the city's website, are setting a programmable thermostat the city installs for automatic energy saving and using appliances such as washing machines, dryers and dishwashers during off-peak hours.

Other changes include using a surge protector/power strip to make it easier to turn the components of the entertainment system off and on one at a time and having a timer on the electric hot water heater.

Easton said the programmable thermostat will be installed by the city but the home must have Internet access and central air-conditioning.

Right Time Pricing is one of two programs available to residential and business owners to reduce electricity usage. The other is the Wadsworth Peak Rewards program, which is also in operation.
