The State Department Inspector General's report on email practices of Department employees...including Hillary Clinton....revealed these two significant details....
OIG identified more than 90 Department employees who periodically used personal email accounts to conduct official business.
“State’s technology is so antiquated that NO ONE uses a State-issued laptop and even high officials routinely end up using their home email accounts to be able to get their work done quickly and effectively.”
Kevin Drum...while acknowledging that the report says Hillary "broke rules", not laws....puts the IG report in perspective....
The IG report doesn't present any evidence that her system was ever hacked. Nor does it suggest that Hillary was deliberately trying to prevent work-related emails from being retained. Nor was she the only one conducting official business on a personal account. Colin Powell did it too, as well as dozens of other State employees.
Josh Marshall concurs....with a bit of well-deserved snark thrown in....
...the report says the issues with the management of the Secretary of State's emails are of longstanding and go back with the last five Secretaries of State. The report also singles out Colin Powell, who had a similar set up. The criticism is there. It definitely wasn't a good arrangement. But to see this as a damaging report after the hyperbolic and frequently insane coverage of this issue is crazy. This was never more than some poor judgment overlayed by a big bureaucratic pissing match all slathered over by a thick layer of partisan game playing and media derp.
Like most Clinton scandals, if there hadn't been months, maybe more than a year of weird conspiracy theories, expected perp walks and general nonsense, one might read this and say, wow, that's disappointing. But after all that, it's just a big nothingburger. Like it almost always is.
Of course that's not what we'll be hearing from the Hystericalized over the next....I don't know....month, or so.
For the vast right wing conspiracy arrayed against the Clintons....which now includes most of corporate media...don't forget....""The national media has never been more primed to take down Hillary Clinton," Politico's Dylan Byers (May 11, 2015).....the point of the Great E-Mail Hunt has always been to create the PERCEPTION that Mrs. Clinton did something illegal. In this, what we've witnessed is a rerun of the 90's shite-throwing "scandals" against Mr. Clinton.
In 2007, now-Fox Fiend, then Bush hack, Dana Perino reported that 5 MILLION Bush White House emails stored on a Republican National Committee server....had disappeared. The response from the Bush White House then? "We screwed up."
As Media Matters has chronicled.....corporate media barely covered the story at the time. I wonder why. Oh, and the vast right wing Wurlitzer back then? The same Wurlitzer oh-so-distraught today over how Hillary handled emails? Crickets.
No, two wrongs don't make a right.....the fact that Karl Rove and Colin Powell also broke email rules doesn't justify Hillary's email practices. But the double-standard-responses of right wing and mainstream media to Republican email rule-breaking and Hillary's couldn't be more vivid. Five million, yes, wiped, emails by GOP officials, wiped from an unauthorized RNC server, were met by mainstream media with a dismissive shrug....nothing to see, move along. 30,000 personal Hillary emails wiped.....and mainstream media goes all rumor-and-innuendo ballistic for a FULL YEAR and counting.
Over the next few weeks, pay attention to how our "wired for Republicans" corporate media blanket covers the IG report. It will prove that the propagandists are still "primed to take down Hillary Clinton."
One more thought. All along I've said that corporate media would be Hillary's biggest opponent this election cycle. The GOP nominee has no idea what he is doing, doesn't know much of anything about the job of the presidency, or, foreign affairs, or laws, or history, or current events...or...well....anything, really. So, as Trump stumbles around wildly, demonstrating how unqualified he is every day by Twittersponding the most outrageous malarkey.....corporate media will increasingly feel sorry for the totally unqualified buffoon. That portends a long summer of "Sympathy for the Buffoon" "journalism" aimed at keeping the election close.
If you have doubts about the visceral hatred main media members have towards the Clintons....or if you wonder why corporate media will be acting so sympathetically deferential to the billionaire Clown over the next 6 months.....review this Bill Moyers article.
Referencing corporate media's role in the 90's multiple-allegation-shiteshow against Bill Clinton.....
The press should have been a firewall against these allegations. Instead, they were an accelerant, not only because they didn’t like the cornpone Clintons, but because they knew the truth was likely to be far less interesting than the suspicions of wrongdoing. The media, after all, are in the reader business, not the truth business.
It's not "the truth" the Clinton-haters in corrupt corporate and right wing media are after...it's the "suspicion of wrongdoing".
Watch as the 2016 Clinton-haters in Big Media help to amplify those "suspicions".
