MadCap Brew Co. is ready to embark on a major expansion, saying it will invest nearly $1 million in its brewery.

The Kent production brewery which just so happens to be celebrating the one-year anniversary of its tasting room this weekend is buying its building at 1422 Mogadore Road, purchasing new fermenters, expanding its taproom space and adding an outdoor patio.

I never imagined at this point wed be here, co-founder Ryan Holmes said. Its humbling and really cool to have the support weve had.

MadCap, known for beers such as Bullet IPA and Bad LeRoy Brown Ale, launched as a nanobrewery in late 2012 in a Stow garage.

It relocated to Kent and expanded with a 10-barrel brewing system last year.

MadCap is pushing its capacity now and has had to turn down requests from bars and restaurants just to keep up with the thirsty drinkers at its tasting room and current accounts. The additional equipment, including new 20-barrel fermenters, will allow the brewery to distribute more of its draft beer. (MadCap doesnt bottle or can.)

If people are coming and knocking at your door, its stupid to turn it down, Holmes said.

Hes not worried about the increased competition, with more breweries opening seemingly every day. MadCap is a little off the beaten path and is a destination space, he said.

The beer industry also is becoming more hyper-local in other words, drinkers are more interested in trying locally made, neighborhood brews and thats where MadCap fits in, Holmes said.

The renovations will include event space and air conditioning. Holmes, who estimated the renovations and investment in equipment at "just under $1 million," wants the taproom to evolve and be a cool place for people to visit. It features communal picnic table seating now and plenty of games such as pinball.

As for that anniversary, MadCap is spreading the celebration over three days: 4 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. (Sept. 29 and 30, and Oct. 1)

Tickets are $15 at the door and include a commemorative glass filled with your favorite MadCap beer. Brewer Vince Rinaldo has created a Belgian-style quad for the occasion.
