Mike Salsbury admitted he was stunned.

The Hilliard homebrewer -- who's been making beer since about 2012 -- won the 23rd annual Homebrew Competition on Sunday (April 22) at Barley's Brewing Co. in Columbus. The winning beer was Dark Abbey, a Belgian-style dark strong ale.

"I don't even know what to say," Salsbury said after being announced as the winner. "I had hoped to do well and break into the top 10."

He finished third last year.

Salsbury's friends and family loved the beer, which he said was "north of 10 percent" alcohol by volume. He also said that he's a big fan of Barley's brewmaster Angelo Signorino Jr., who announced the winners.

Salsbury and Signorino now will get together and make the beer on Barley's system and it will be released next year during the brewpub's annual Afternoon with the Brewers, a beer tasting featuring a slew of Columbus area brewers that coincides with the Homebrew Competition announcement. In case you want to try your hand at Salsbury's recipe, he posts his recipes at www.beginbrewing.com.

Last year's winner, A.J. Zanyk was on hand Sunday to tap his baltic porter.
