It's no longer a dream: MadTree Brewing Co. announced Monday (Aug. 28) that Dreamsicle -- its beloved kolsch with creamy orange and vanilla flavors -- will be released this week in cans.

The Cincinnati brewery will host a can release party from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

MadTree has long been serving Dreamsicle on draft but it hasn't been available in cans. The beer, a best seller at the brewery's taproom, replicates the tastes of a Creamsicle Popsicle.

Fans always begged MadTree to package Dreamsicle, but the brewery stood firm in putting it out in draft only. Then last year, MadTree released a rending of a Dreamsicle can featuring an orange octopus holding an ice cream cone as an April Fool's joke. Fans squealed with joy -- not realizing that it was a prank. Later, superfan Adam Marcum even launched an online Change.org petition urging the brewery to can the beer.

The beer also will be featured in my new book 50 Must-Try Craft Beers of Ohio.

The new Dreamsicle cans feature, not surprisingly, an orange octopus holding an ice cream cone.

“Dreamsicle was one of those beers created on a whim by the brewers that really caught the attention of taproom patrons,” MadTree Brewing graphic designer Nicki Logsdon said in a prepared statement. “We thought it would be a funny April Fool’s Day prank to act like we were going to can it, so I came up with what I thought was a ridiculous octopus eating an ice cream cone design. The response was a bit overwhelming, to say the least, so we decided to roll with the now famous octopus.”

There will be a limit of one case per person during the release party. Cans and draft will be distributed to restaurants, bars and retailers starting Friday in most MadTree markets. Six-packs will retail for $9.99.
