Brian Dugger wants to know who makes the best IPA in Northwest Ohio.

To that end, the Toledo Blade beer writer is putting together the inaugural Best IPA of Northwest Ohio competition. (Legal disclaimer here: The Toledo Blade isn't sponsoring the tasting, although the newspaper will be writing about and producing a video of the event.)

Dugger has invited all the craft breweries in the Toledo area to submit their top IPA -- regardless of whether it's a West Coast, imperial, New England-style or session -- for the blind, judged contest. The competition will take place March 11 at Black Cloister Brewing Co. in downtown Toledo and feature Dugger, Glass City Mashers homebrew club President Jon Sicotte and myself serving as the judges. The tasting isn't open to the public.

Twelve breweries already have committed.

Dugger decided to hold the contest because of the rise in craft brewery openings in the area.

"It's kind of a celebration of a really growing beer market in Northwest Ohio," he said.

So who makes the best IPA in Northwest Ohio? Stay tuned.
