The GOP decided before President Obama took his oath of office that they would oppose and obstruct the new president's agenda. They would not cooperate or search for ways to compromise with the nation's first black president....they would oppose him at every turn.
The issue which Republicans have really put their shoulders into obstructing is Obamacare. Even though Obamacare was fashioned from the same program Republican Governor and 2012 GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney implemented in the state of Massachusetts.....and even though the health care exchange idea within Obamacare was originally a conservative-Republican response proposal to a plan Hillary Clinton recommended in the early 90's.....Republicans have treated the health coverage plan by Obama as if it were the Black Death.
37 separate times House Republicans have voted to abolish Obamacare....a law which passed with 60 votes in the Senate and a clear majority in the House. Even though when asked, after Obama's re-election, about the legitimacy of Obamacare, Speaker Boehner responded with "it's the law of the land".....that hasn't stopped his GOP comrades in the House and Senate from severely impeding the law's implementation....
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told the Senate Finance Committee in April that she requested $10 billion in implementation funds but got only $1 billion. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah.), the ranking Republican on the panel, accused Sebelius of improperly diverting money from other programs to pay for implementation. The secretary countered that, under the law, the administration is required to properly educate the public about its benefits.
The Obamacare law includes within it provisions a mandate to educate the public about the details of the health care bill and it's upcoming implementation. Republicans refuse to fund that public education process. Worse, Republicans have threatened to investigate HHS head Kathleen Sebelius' efforts to find other funding for Obamacare public education.
Republican lawmakers are demanding that Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary fulfill a request for documents about her fundraising efforts on behalf of Enroll America.
In a letter to Sebelius, 28 GOP senators expressed suspicions about Enroll America, which was created to promote ObamaCare, and its ties to the administration.
Obstructionist Republicans, having already refused to fund Obamacare public education, are now trying to bully and thug their way into stopping any private sources from providing replacement funding.
But yesterday, these neo-Confederate, enemies of the American democratic process, took a stride in the direction of their true fascist natures. The GOP goonsquad, led by the venerable nullificationist himself, Mitch McConnell, has now actually threatened America's six professional sports leagues. Crazy, I know....but here it is.....
Senate Republican leaders have sent letters warning six professional sports leagues not to provide the Obama administration any assistance in promoting Obamacare.
The letters, dated June 27, warn the chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, Professional Golf Association and NASCAR that partnering with the administration to publicize the benefits of the health care law would damage their reputations.
Pure thuggishness. This letter to sports league presidents is a threat. A threat by fascist-like thugs seeking to nullify a democratically passed law from being implemented. Jon Cornyn (R-TX) and Kentucky's own Box Turtle look-a-like Mitch McConnell sent a letter to the six pro-sports league presidents threatening them....here is a portion....
“Given the divisiveness and persistent unpopularity of this bill, it is difficult to understand why an organization like yours would risk damaging its inclusive and apolitical brand by lending its name to its promotion,” wrote Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX).
"risk damaging its inclusive and apolitical brand".....that is definitely a see-through, veiled threat.
Perhaps the most profound WTF sentences in the letter are these....
"Perhaps most concerning of all, Obamacare would also direct the federal government to intervene into some of Americans' most personal health care decisions."
Like medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasounds?
"Just this week, a Gallup poll showed that a majority of Americans disapprove of Obamacare..."
1) American legislation is not passed by popular opinion or we would have universal background checks for all gun purchases. Instead 60% of the Senate and a strong majority in the House approved Obamacare and President Obama signed it into law.
2) The Gallup poll is meant to mislead. 54% polled oppose Obamacare, 43% support the law. BUT....16% of those who disapprove think the law is not liberal enough. Which translates into 59% of Americans who either support Obamacare the way it is or would, if the law was more liberal.
Hardly a nullificationist's talking point. Even if the nullificationist resorts to thuggery.
