The Indians on Wednesday purchased the contract of relief pitcher Ryan Webb from Triple-A Columbus and designated outfielder Jerry Sands for assignment.

Webb, 29, signed with the Indians after he was out-righted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and opted for free agency. He had been acquired by Baltimore four days earlier.

Webb had a 1-1 record and an ERA of 1.13 in five games for Triple-A Columbus. He has a career 3.38 ERA in the majors between stints with Baltimore, Miami and San Diego.

Sands was hitting .348 in 23 at-bats with the Indians. He would have almost surely been designated for assignment once outfielder Nick Swisher is able to come off the disabled list.
