A grass-roots group in northeast Iowa is pushing a petition to ban the mining of fracking sands in Iowa.

The Allamakee County Protectors want to gather 3,000 signatures before Jan. 13 to give to Iowa legislators.

The group is trying to minimize sand mining in the area where Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconin and Illinois meet.

Much of the sand used in hydraulic fracturing or fracking comes from the region.
