MadTree Brewing Co. in Cincinnati made brewing history today in Ohio by becoming the first modern craft brewery to start canning its beer in the state. The first brew off the line -- which is pumping out 27 cans a minute -- was psycHOPathy, an India pale ale.

"As cool as it is, it’s about the liquid in the cans more than the can," co-owner Brady Duncan said.

The first batches are headed to Great American Ball Park, where the Cincinnati Reds open their season on Monday against the Los Angeles Angels. MadTree also will start canning its Happy Amber and Gnarly Brown soon. The canned beers are expected to start hitting the market by mid-April. In the meantime, they can be purchased at the brewery.

Two other Ohio craft breweries -- Fat Head's in Middleburg Heights and Jackie O's in Athens -- have plans to release cans but haven't started yet.

Duncan, who launched MadTree with Jeff Hunt and Kenny McNutt , said they snagged about the first 150 cans. They held onto the first four and expected to give away the others to investors. Others may be auctioned off for charity, Duncan said.

He chuckled that the brewery already sold two six-packs. A beer fan just happened to walk into the brewery today and purchased some of the first cans made.
