Nearly 900 wells have been permitted in Ohio's Utica shale.

The actual number is 899, as of Sept. 21, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

A total of 561 wells have been drilled and 152 wells are producing.

Ohio has 34 drilling rigs at work.

The 12 new permits include five in Carroll County, one in Columbiana County, one in Guernsey County, three in Harrison County, one in Monroe County and one in Washington County.
