Ohio will be well-represented at the upcoming World Beer Cup in Denver. At least 14 Ohio brewers have entered the competition, which takes place April 6-8 before the Craft Brewers Conference.

The winners will be announced April 11.

The World Beer Cup, sponsored every two years by the Brewers Association in Boulder, Colo., has never been more popular. The event has been taking place since 1996.

About 1,450 brewers in 61 countries entered about 4,900 beers this year, association spokesman Spencer Powlison said. That’s up from 799 breweries in 54 countries and 3,921 beers two years ago.

The meteoric rise in entries — thanks to the meteoric rise in craft breweries — has a downside, of course. Brewers were limited to entering four beers this year because of, as Powlison put it, the "logistical challenge" of getting all those beers judged over a couple of days.

“We’ve tried to adjust registration to accommodate new breweries,” he said.

That put some breweries who have entered a ton of beers in the past in a pickle.

“We had to give it a lot of thought,” Hoppin’ Frog Brewery owner and brewer Fred Karm said about selecting only four beers. Two years ago, Hoppin’ Frog won a gold medal for its Barrel Aged B.O.R.I.S. the Crusher Oatmeal-Imperial Stout.

The Brewers Association doesn’t release the names of brewers who enter so I put out a call to Ohio brewers to share if they’ve entered and what they have entered. Obviously, they submit what they consider their best beers.

Here’s the rundown, which may be incomplete if a brewery didn’t respond. It will be updated if I hear of others:

Christian Moerlein and the Moerlein Lager House (two separate operations): Barbarossa Dark Lager, Zeppelin, Northern Liberties, Emancipator, Helles and Trippple P.

Fat Head’s Brewery and Brewery & Saloon (two separate operations): Head Hunter IPA, Up In Smoke, Sunshine Daydream, Hop JuJu, Black Knight, Battleaxe, IBUsive and Bonehead Red.

Gordon Biersch Columbus: American-Style Stout.

Fifty West: 10&2 Barleywine bourbon barrel aged, Penny’s Pilsner, Thirty-37 Session Pale Ale and Coffee Please Stout.

Hoppin’ Frog: Karm declined to say which four beers. But it shouldn't be too hard to guess given the brewery's impressive medal history.

MadTree: Lift, Galaxy High, PsycHOPathy and Happy Amber.

Market Garden: Trouble, Progress Pilsner, Cluster Fuggle and Pearl Street Wheat.

Nano Brew Cleveland: Namber and Funky Pippali.

Rhinegeist: Cougar, Truth, Panther Robust Porter and Saber Tooth Tiger Imperial IPA.

Rivertown: Old Sour Cherry Porter, Lambic, Ojos Negros and Triumvirate.

Thirsty Dog: Barrel-Aged Siberian Night, Wulver Wee Heavy and Cerasus Dog.

Weasel Boy: Anastasia Russian Imperial Stout, Dark Weasel Mint Chocolate Stout and Barrel aged Brown Stoat Stout.

Willoughby: Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter, Moondance IPA and Little Dipper Pale Ale.

Yellow Springs: Kerfuffle, Wyatt’s Eviction, Captain Stardust and Handsome.
