Pilsner Urquell head brewmaster Vaclav Berka will visit the Winking Lizard Tavern in Lakewood on Wednesday (Nov. 6) as part of a special tasting. The visit was prompted by readers of Draft Magazine naming the Winking Lizard as one of the "Freshest Bars in America."

The event, scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m., will include a tasting of unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell shipped from the Czech Republic brewery. There also will be a blind taste test of the "Filtered, Pasturized Pilsner Urquell from the CZ Rep and the Express Shipped Cold Pilsner side by side and see if you can taste a difference, we can't," a brewery representative said in an email.

Pilsner Urquell is one of the most famous brands in the world. "In 1842, [Josef Groll] placed a grenade down the pants of traditional European brewing by creating the first ever golden lager in the town of Pilsen in Bohemia," author Ben McFarland wrote in his 2009 book World's Best Beers. "Prior to this, all beer was dark, cloudy and, more often than not, a little lousy."
