Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn is in discussions with the House and Senate intelligence committees on receiving immunity from "unfair prosecution" in exchange for agreeing to be questioned as part of ongoing probes into possible contacts between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia, his attorney says.
You'll have to excuse my snark, but....does the above mean that Mike Flynn doesn't want immunity from a "fair prosecution"...just an "unfair" one? It's all so confusing.
On cue, the dimwit president, responding to the Flynn news, adds to the confusion...
ďMike Flynn should ask for immunity in that this is a witch hunt (excuse for big election loss), by media & Dems, of historic proportion!Ē Trump wrote on Twitter
Why would it be necessary to seek immunity from a "witch hunt"? Is Trump suggesting that the FBI's active investigation into possible Trump campaign coordination with Russians to influence last year's election is a "witch hunt"? Is it normally the case that ALL intelligence agencies arrive at the same consensus over a ..."witch hunt"? On Trump's insistence that this entire "witch hunt" is just being used as an excuse for Hillary's loss.....why would James Comey have started his investigation into the Russian-Trump campaign thing back last July.....months BEFORE anyone knew who would win the November election?
So, no, the dimwit in the White House....should have kept his stubby fingers quiet because in all likelihood, this is why Flynn's lawyer is reaching out for immunity....
"...the very fact that Flynnís lawyer is making a play for immunity at this stage suggests that he has some fear that his client faces real criminal exposure.Ē
Here, Barton Gellman asks some very, very disturbing questions about what all the Devin Nunes night meetup with two of Trump's White House people last Tuesday night might be about....
...what exactly were Trumpís appointees doing? I am not talking only about the political chore of ginning up (ostensible) support for the presidentís baseless claims about illegal surveillance by President Obama. I mean this: why would a White House lawyer and the top White House intelligence adviser be requesting copies of these surveillance reports in the first place? Why would they go on to ask that the names be unmasked? There is no chance that the FBI would brief them about the substance or progress of its investigation into the Trump campaignís connections to the Russian government. Were the presidentís men using the surveillance assets of the U.S. government to track the FBI investigation from the outside?
In other words, were White House employees rooting around in classified material, and "using surveillance assets of the U.S. government".....to "track" what Comey's FBI has on the Trumpers, and where they are headed in their investigation....SO THAT they could come up with a bogus-story battle plan to use to counter media reporting on the story?
And why, if the Trumpers are innocent of any wrongdoing vis-a-vis the Russians,...why would the White House go to such desperate, and possibly felonious measures? I get that the Trump White House is trying to create the perception that they are all innocent of any wrongdoing in the Russian investigation.....what I don't get is why the Trump White House would conduct such an obviously ridiculous and potentially criminal caper last week just to counter main media reporting.
Yesterday, we learned the identities of the White House employs who allegedly presented Devin Nunes with evidence of something, something...Obama. One of those named yesterday was a Mike Flynn hire and fellow Islamophobe...30 year-old Ezra Cohen-Watnick. Josh Marshall offers up this....
Ezra Cohen-Watnick went to extraordinary, at least highly improper and likely illegal steps, to engage in political pushback on the President's behalf. There is at least some circumstantial evidence that he was doing this to monitor or subvert the FBI's investigation of the President and his top associates. Whether political pushback or obstruction, it is unlikely Cohen-Watnick would take such perilous steps on his own.
It's that last sentence...whether Cohen-Watnick would go all Lone Ranger, or whether he was instructed by others to stage last week's clown caper...that poses the biggest risk for Donald's White House now. Marshall suggests the Lone Ranger option is "unlikely". I think that's right.
What that means, then, is that the Trump White House is actively conspiring to influence an FBI investigation of....the Trump White House. The sign to me that these Trumpers are guilty....of something....is seen in the fact that Trump team members have been willing to commit possible crimes to either influence the FBI investigation and/or influence the media coverage of the FBI investigation. Both Nunes and Cohen-Watnick have now placed themselves in felonious legal jeopardy.
Why would they do that....if Trump and his minions are innocent of any wrongdoing?
I've been writing that the Trump White House is in a heap of trouble. That heap gets bigger every single day.
