Although planned for months, Politico knew what President Obama was up to in visiting Pope Francis yesterday.....
President Barack Obama was once the biggest superstar on the international stage. On Thursday, he headed here to benefit from the popularity of his replacement: Pope Francis.
The 50-minute meeting was a rare chance for Obama to associate himself with a world leader whose cool factor far outweighs his own, and it comes at a critical time in his presidency.
Politico writers are so tuned in that they now no longer need to support anything they write....they just start out with unprovable speculation and then proceed from there. Politico just knows. And what Politico knows is what almost all corporate media knows.....no one likes Obama, nah, nah, nah, nah nah.
Speaking of childishness.....here's what the person on loan from ....gawwwd....thought about the Politico hit piece on Obama....
"Obama had to go visit the Vicar of Christ to try to get some of the excess "cool factor" that the pope has. In fact, the original Politico headline for their article was: "Obama Wants Halo Effect."
Can you understand the humiliation of Barack Obama having to meet with the leader of the Catholic Church in order to recapture some cred?"
The one thing that Mr. Limbaugh and Politico's CEO Jim Vandehi have in common here is that no one will ever confuse either of being, you know, cool. Cool is not something one can become. Cool....just is. Obama, whether you love or hate him, will always be seen as cool, Limbaugh and Vandehi will never be regarded that way.
I bring this up because this example of petty, speculative, childish narrative construction goes on every minute of every day in the Village and in the fevered, and diseased, right wing media swamps....where facts are entirely optional....
Limbaugh...."Was this scheduled, was this on the itinerary, or did Obama decide to make a detour on his way out of Belgium to Rome?"
CNN, January 14, 2014.....President Barack Obama plans to soon meet with Pope Francis for the first time.
Who needs details and facts when mean-spirited speculation serves the purpose at hand?
But as I listened to Limbaugh yesterday and then read the Politico piece....I began to think that there was something out of whack in their rhetoric concerning Obama's papal visit. I asked myself....now why make a big deal out of Obama visiting with the new pope?
Limbaugh gave the answer in one little slip....
"He's trying to soak up this income inequality thing that the pope stands for, and the pope's cool factor."
"this income inequality thing".....there it is. Conservatives and Republicans....oh, and Limbaugh himself.....have been having a difficult time with the new popular pope's clear words about supply-side economics and income inequality.
You see, trickle-down, or supply-side economics is Reaganomics. In short, Reaganomics cuts taxes drastically on the wealthy while simultaneously eliminating corporate regulations. The result is supposed to be prosperity for all....the trickle down part....but that has never proven to be the case. What supply-side economics actually does is push prosperity upwards to only the wealthiest of the wealthy....producing larger gaps in income disparity.
"the income inequality thing"......in the words of Pope Francis.....
"Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power."
Pope Francis understands the false hope contained in Republican economic policies and the deceptive rhetoric economic conservatives use to sell the voodoo.....and THAT is what really makes Limbaugh and Villagers upset.
Here's GOP VP candidate Paul Ryan daring to respond to the words of Francis...."The guy is from Argentina," said Ryan. "They haven't had real capitalism in Argentina." And here's Limbaugh himself....."he [the pope] doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to capitalism and socialism."
Francis is very popular right now and supply siders, and the media that serve supply-siders, know that. They know that directly attacking what the popular Francis said about failed conservative economics is risky. So, they slyly, even though speculatively, attack Obama as the pope's proxy. Sure, Politico and Limbaugh just made stuff up out of whole Obama-hate cloth.....but there is nothing unique or unusual about that.
What really upsets these conservatives is not the "cool factor" of personalities like Obama or Francis.....it's truth. Truth spoken with clarity. Truth about the negative consequences of conservative economic policies. Truth about the phony hope continually offered up by conservative spokespeople touting the proven-failure that is supply-side economics.
Reaganomics have proven to be a dismal failure. Average Americans have not seen their personal boats lifted as the rich few amassed glacier-sized fortunes over the past 30 years. Obama and Francis understand that truth.....conservatives can't bear hearing that truth.
