The Reverend

This is what GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, told NBC's Brian Williams about the United Kingdom's hosting of the Olympic Games....

"You know, it's hard to know just how well it will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting," Romney said.".

"The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials that obviously is not something which is encouraging."

"Because there are three parts that makes Games successful."

"Number one, of course, are the athletes. That's what overwhelmingly the Games are about. Number two are the volunteers. And they'll have great volunteers here. But number three are the people of the country. Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? And that's something which we only find out once the Games actually begin."

The question here is: What the heck was Mitt thinking? What prompted the former blue state governor to talk such smack about Britain's hosting of the Olympic Games? How could a devoutly religious person like Romney, a well-spoken, normally courteous, man......behave so badly?

The reason is that Mitt Romney is really a tiny doofus.

Let me explain.

Small people are insecure in their own person. A small person is the person who, when you mention something in particular, takes off on a monologue over how, what, where and when he, himself, experienced/mastered/excelled-at/was awarded for.....the very same "something" you mentioned. I know that you know people like this.

Mitt's rude and out of place criticism of the UK's hosting of the Olympic Games.....his total lack of graciousness.....comes from Mitt's smallness as a person. Rather than praise and compliment the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, and the nation's efforts in hosting the Games.....Mitt took the opportunity to, once again, pat himself on the back over his alleged "saving" of the 2002 Winter games in Utah, aka "the middle of nowhere."

That's exactly what Romney was doing in his uncalled-for comments directed at Britain's efforts in preparing and holding the Games this year. His comments can only be explained, I think, by understanding that Mitt sees himself as a unique, redemptive figure. He, alone, as the legend goes, "saved" the 2002 Olympics. Of course, the $1.5 billion in federal tax subsidies to Utah in 2002 didn't actually impede Mitt's efforts.

Could it be that the "savior" of the 2002 Games looks into the accomplishment-mirror in his own mind....and in that self-satisfying mirror, Mitt sees himself as the 11 foot Jesus statue on display in Zion....I mean, Salt Lake City.? A messianic figure who rode into Utah on a white horse and redeemed, single handedly, the Winter games of 2002?

Therefore, based on those self-delusions of grandeur, Romney felt like it was his place to criticize and doubt the ability of other lesser Anglo-Saxons, like David Cameron, to do what his singularly-redemptive self had already a successful Olympic Games.

Or, as The New Republic puts it....

Romney did a perfectly fine job running the Olympics, but so have lots of other people...

Romney is deeply invested in the idea that it takes superhuman skills to save an Olympic Games from the disaster and international humiliation to which it naturally inclines. The idea that it can be done reasonably well even by a past-its-prime power like Britain is too much for Romney to bear. And I'm afraid he let it show at a very inopportune moment.

Shorter version....and you must admit, that Mitt Romney is a "tiny doofus."
