The Reverend

The in-law consensus opinion of this year's choices for president is as follows: 'One candidate is a lying bitch and the other is an asshole'. So, corporate media's hard work to convince audiences that both-sides-do-it,..both-siderism...is paying grassroots dividends.

One in-law said he would probably skip the presidential boxes on election day and just vote for the down ticket candidates. A few in-laws support the Donald because, they said, Hillary would be worse. Those who plan to vote Trump really, really hate the HildaBeast. However, many younger in-laws oppose Trump....for many of the same reasons you've read about here on this blog.

What became clear to me these past six days is the effect of the "two news narratives" I've been writing about for quite awhile. Because of those dual narratives, thoughtful discussions became virtually impossible.

In one brief exchange that illustrates the nature of the dual narrative problem, I was told that low natural gas prices are not the reason that coal is not being used as much to generate electricity. Instead, I was informed that coal is actually cheaper than natural gas BECAUSE the price of coal has been artificially increased by federal regulations.

As the theory was expanded for me, I was told that scientific studies into man's contribution to global climate change are bogus because the 90+% of scientists are, somehow, loosely affiliated in a conspiracy to keep that federal grant money gravy train flowing....and because they are corrupt....they have cherry-picked testing locations around the globe to derive their biased numbers.

When asked what should be done....I was told that data from many more global testing locations must be included before a more accurate picture is derived.

The NFL player who now refuses to stand for the National Anthem received a thorough tongue lashing from many in-laws....as did the flag burners....as did Black Lives Matter. I felt like I was back living in 1968.

Many were very sure of what they don't like....but when it came down to reasons for supporting Mr Trump, the offerings were slim. 'He's a successful businessman', 'he's not a politician or an insider establishment guy'.....was just about all there was.

What I gathered from those exchanges was that what more-conservative members of the family really despise is liberalism. And the younger, more liberal family members asked questions and raised issues...it seemed to me....in an attempt to understand why the more conservative members held to the beliefs they did, especially when the facts do not support those beliefs.

Blogging will be sketchy here through Labor Day.....some unexpected things have come up. But from the little I've read this past week, there's very little that's new to opine over. We have learned that Anthony Weiner is still a very disturbed asshole.....hardly breaking news,....and we've learned that, yes, the serial sexual harasser, Roger Ailes, is, indeed, prepping Trump for the presidential debates. Seems scandalous to many.....but alas, it is but standard operating procedure. I have also learned that Trump campaign CEO, a peach of a guy, Steve Bannon.....once told his wife, one of his wives at least, that his children would not be going to a private school alongside "phucking Jews".

And of course, the Maine Maniac, Gov. Paul LePage....you probably already know......called a state lawmaker a "socialist cocksucker", recently. So, conservative family values, I'm guessing here, are making a strong return this cycle.

I'll be back....to the keyboard....as soon as I can manage it.
