Housekeeping: Don't forget, Monday, Aug. 28, is the last day to let me know you need to be assigned to a Blue Line Beginners relay team. We also have a need for more runners who can do a pace of 13:44 or better to balance out our walkers, so help us beat the bushes looking for them. If you have some runner friends, coworkers or family members in need of a relay team, we would love to adopt them. Or if you already know of a relay team with an opening and they might like to help a BLB walker achieve their dream of finishing the race series, they can adopt us! Either way, drop me a line at

I was giving some thought to the future of Blue Line Beginners after this year's Akron Marathon Race Series when the calendar next to my desk caught my attention. August 23. Where has the time gone? More importantly, it's exactly one month from our third and final race! I suspect that time is going to keep on flying by, so we should probably get started right now planning our transition from an Akron Beacon Journal program to an Akron-area running/walking group. There are, of course, other such groups in existance, but I think we're pretty unique and can fill a very special niche in the community.

Let's start by forming a steering committee of five or six people to discuss how to move forward. This is a committee that would decide, for instance, whether we should elect officers. Do we need sub committees for planning activities? Can we do what we want to do without collecting dues? Should we set up a website? Should we survey members on certain questions? That sort of thing. I'd love to keep things as simple as possible, but sometimes the best way to do that is to take the time to do it right.

If you would like to be on the steering committee, send me an email at with the subject header STEERING. I'm looking for people who can be available for 2-3 hours on a week night. With a little luck, we can knock out a strategic plan in a single session. If I get more than 5 or 6 offers, I'll draw names at random.

Anyway, hope everyone's training is going well this week. So far, forecasters are predicting a cool and dry Saturday morning for our Akron Marathon race course trial run. We'll see you there!
