It's less than two weeks to the Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Team Relay, and it's pretty much on my mind every day. But I had to refocus for just a few minutes Sunday to get registered for the Great Pumpkin Run in downtown Akron on Oct. 21. I've been warned that the event has been known to sell out early, so if you want to join the Blue Line Beginners for that special fall run, it would be better to do it sooner than later.

Go to http://www.thegreatpumpkinrun.com/events/akron to get started. You can do a 5k, or a 15k. For our half marathoners, the timing of that 15k is great because you'll still be in fighting shape! You can run, walk or run/walk these events.

I registered "Blue Line Beginners" as a social team. When you register, sign up for that social team and enter the password "blb17". That will get you $5 off the registration fee so that, with the processing fee, your total bill will be $39. For a few bucks more you can add the "tough pumpkin" option and get a special medal for carrying a 10-pound pumpkin the length of the course. (I passed on that.)

There are different starting times (or "waves) to choose from. I chose 9:20 a.m., though I don't see how it really matters. They are all pretty close together.

Participants get a lightweight tech hoodie, a finisher's medal, commemorative bib and chip timing, a cup of apple cider at the finish line, a small pumpkin to take home and free professional race photos.

The race starts at Lock 3. Closer to race day, we'll designate a meeting spot so we can hang out before and after the race and maybe grab a table at a local pub for some post-event drinks and burgers. Personally, I'm looking forward to doing a 5k. Since the smallest distance in the race series for me this year was an 8k, it will be fun to do a short event and have enough strength left to enjoy everyone's company and walk back to my car without limping!
