Many of you have commented about wanting Blue Line Beginners to continue after we finish our original goal of completing the 2017 Akron Marathon Race Series, and I couldn't agree more.
Particularly brilliant was a suggestion from one member that next April, we each try to bring in a family member, friend or co-worker and use what we learned to help them completel the 2018 series.
I love the idea of inspiring others to get out and move. That's why I wanted to pass on information about Girls on the Run Northeast Ohio-- because if you happen to have a school-age daughter, granddaughter, niece or other young lady in your life, you don’t have to wait to get them started.
Girls on the Run has been organizing after-school running clubs for girls in grades 3 through 8 for a couple of decades, and their short registration window for this fall is coming up fast.
They use a 10-week curriculum that culminates with a 5k race in which girls from seven counties participate. They describe their program as “helping young girls to realize their limitless potential while improving emotional and physical health. The girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, confident young women.”
So if know of a young girl who could benefit from something like that, here’s what they need to know:
Girls on the Run registration begins 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 22 and closes Aug. 27 using an online lottery-based system. The registration cost is based on family income, with a sliding scale from $10 to $150.
The training program - mostly held at schools or parks - runs twice a week beginning Sept. 11 and concludes with the race on Nov. 12.

As for where BLB will head after Sept. 23, we will figure it out together. Stay tuned!
