The Browns selected Alabama fullback Brad Smelley tonight in the seventh round (No. 247 overall) of the NFL Draft.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Smelley is a hybrid player who can play fullback and tight end.

The 6-foot-2, 233-pound Smelley started 10 of 13 games last season as a senior. Smelley, a college teammate of new Browns running back Trent Richardson, had a team-high seven catches in the BCS National Championship game against Louisiana State.

The 247th selection was one of four compensatory picks awarded to the Browns because they suffered net losses in free agency last year. It was the teamís last pick of the draft.
