Alabama fullback Brad Smelley, whom the Browns drafted in the seventh round (No. 247 overall), spoke to reporters during a conference call. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(On being reunited with Trent Richardson) – “I can’t wait. Trent just called me and it was good to talk to him and good to know that I’m going to be with him because he’s an unbelievable player. Obviously, I think he’s the best back I’ve ever play with, no doubt about it. He’s the best back I’ve ever seen in person. I’m excited to play with him again. He is a great football player, but a better person. I love that guy.”

(On how he was used in Alabama’s offense) – “Yes, I was used in a variety of different ways. They split me out, maybe be on the line (like a) traditional tight end, they put me in the backfield and move around. I was more of the move around tight end. We had another guy who was more of a point tight end. We called it h-back, is how I was used. Just a lot of different stuff. Coach McElwain was my coach every year I was there. He just moved, but he used the tight ends, the two tight end set and moved around a lot and did a lot of different things with us.”

(On being such a big part of the NCAA championship game offensively) – “I think just the latter part of the season we started getting mismatches with teams. Coach McElwain put some good stuff for me together that could have some opportunities and I made well on them. I just had more opportunities later in the year to make plays. The offense, we really just started clicking at the right time and played well through the end of the season and finished strong in New Orleans.”

(On if he had any idea the Browns were interested) – “Actually, yes, I talked to a lot of teams, a lot of coaches and the Browns were one of those teams that I hadn’t talked to that much. I’ve had a little bit of contact, but it was a surprise and I am grateful for the opportunity and excited to be a Brown.”

(On what did Trent say and if he put in a good word with the Browns) – “Trent said a coach called him and asked him about (me) and said ‘Go get that guy.’ I appreciated that from my man.”

(On what the last hour was like for him) – “Everything started picking up in the last hour and I talked to a good amount of teams. People started calling in case I didn’t get drafted. People were calling saying that they wanted to draft me. So it really just heated up and it worked out for the best and I can’t wait to be up in Cleveland.”

(On if the Browns have told him how they will use him) – “No, everything has been kind of hectic so far. I am sure that we will talk later on tonight when everything cools down a little bit and go more in depth about that.”
