BEREA: The Browns drafted Memphis linebacker Genard Avery in the fifth round (No. 150 overall) on Saturday.

Avery started 34 of the 50 games in which he appeared and compiled 233 tackles, with 45.5 for loss and 21.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, seven passes defensed and two interceptions. Last season as a senior, he tallied 80 tackles, with 22 for loss and 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two passes defensed.

Avery, 6-foot 1/2 and 248 pounds, said he can play middle or outside linebacker.

As a student at Grenada High School in Mississippi, he was a two-time state champion powerlifter in high school. He set state records with a 580-pound deadlift, a 605-pound squat and a 360-pound bench press.
