Cleveland Browns training camp begins at the end of July, but it's never too early to take a look at some of the position battles that could take place.
On the Akron Beacon Journal and Ohio.com podcast two weeks ago, we broke down some of the positions that could be up for grabs on offense. These week Browns beat writer Nate Ulrich turns his attention toward the defense.
Although it's not a competition for a position, could we see a leader emerge on the defense? The natural choice when it comes to leading the Browns defense is cornerback Joe Haden. But with the veteran battling injuries, could a player like defensive lineman Desmond Bryant or cornerback Tramon Williams take a greater leadership role?

After Haden and Williams, the cornerback group seems up in the air. Will new addition Jamar Taylor push K'Waun Williams for the starting nickel job? And what of Justin Gilbert? Is the former eighth overall pick down to his last chance with the Browns?
The same question could be posed for outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo. Second-year linebacker Nate Orchard has pushed past Mingo in the starting lineup, but will rookie Emmanuel Ogbah show in training camp that he should get more snaps?
Along the defensive line, there is a lot of bodies. Danny Shelton and Bryant are locks to start up front. Could Xavier Cooper push John Hughes for the other starting spot?
We close this week's show by talking about the special teams battles -- and yes, there are some.
