LeBron James has until Friday to tell the Cavaliers if he will opt in or opt out of his current contract.

If he opts out, as is expected, he will be free to sign with any team, including the Cavs, after free-agency starts July 1.

Many factors will go into his decision and Cavs fans have many reasons for him to stay.

Here are a some of the reasons fans gave the Beacon Journal through Ohio.com when they were asked why they think LeBron should stay:

I feel LeBron should stay with the Cavs because Cleveland sports fans have suffered for years with the disappointing & embarrassing Browns. This city needs to keep our hero to lead the Cavs to championships & make us proud!

— Kim Mitchell

I’m just a kid from Akron Ohio ... an old kid, from East Akron. We needed someone like LeBron when I was growing up. He would have changed a lot of lives back then. We need LeBron to stay in Ohio. While he has many great projects helping people with housing, schools and college tuition, his physical presence will be an additional reminder to keep youngsters headed in the right direction. Today’s youth definitely need as many good role models as they can get. You’re doing great work LeBron, don’t leave and let us down.

— Janet Morrison

Honestly, I want LeBron to make the right decision for himself and his family. However, if he leaves, I will suffer a loss almost as emotional as losing a family member. I am so proud of the wonderful man he has become. My grandchildren are impressed when I tell them I also graduated from LeBron’s high school. I do not feel the necessity to confess the fact that there was a 50-year gap between the two. I want LeBron to stay because I love the guy.

We are family, and no one loves you like family.

— William Messner

LeBron James should stay in Cleveland because his fame is a direct result of his environment. He is a magnificent human being because of his hometown roots that were planted here in OH. He grew here with irreplaceable values and dedication of hard work that are an important legacy to his beautiful children. With all that said, his fans adore him and would be broken hearted if he left.

— Sherrie Winkler

You can’t pick your friends just to win a championship. That’s not worthy. However you can choose where to live amongst your loyal loving fans. Your children are well adjusted to this area and I believe your wife’s devotion to your foundation is also reason enough to stay.

— Jim Kelly

LeBron should stay because he has nothing more to prove. He will never be loved like he is loved in Northeast Ohio. This is part of this land, like he said so eloquently “this is where he bled.” We love him unconditionally ... this is where you and your family belong. Please stay.

— Jan Quarles

LeBron,

You have become a role model who has given more than you can ever imagine to children in Akron. Most importantly, you have taught them to value their education, not to waste opportunities and have given them hope for a brighter future. Please stay in Akron and let them pay you back by sharing with you their successes and watching “just kids from Akron” grow into adults who also give back to their community and continue to make Akron a better, more caring city that is a shining example to the entire nation.

We know you will never forget Akron and we hope you remain here with us and retire as a Cleveland Cavalier.

— Sue Young

LeBron, do it for all the children, not just yours who need you close at this stage of their lives, but for your I Promise kids, they need you, too. They (the I Promise kids) all love you and need to see you as much as possible so they can continue to look to your example, for a role model that they may not have in any other form.

Dear LeBron,

Please don’t leave; I’m an 86-year-old mother with 11 kids. We all love you. You take care of your family and many other children. You are a great humanitarian. We hope you will remain the kid from Akron in Akron. Please stay with us. You are part of our family:)!!!!!

— Shirley Keller

LeBron,

In Ohio, you are more than just a Basketball Champion. You are the Champion of Children. ... All of the children. They wear your jersey with pride not only because of the player you are, but the man you are. They look up to you, and you have given them a hope like they have never had before. In you, they can see themselves. In you they see a future, and to many children in Akron, you have given them a future. Your foundation, the future school .... YOU are their CHAMPION! No other area will be able to relate to you the way Akronites do. Other fans in other areas will cheer for you because you are a great basketball player. None will able to relate to you as one of their own. Please continue to be the Kid from Akron, The Champion of Children.

— Vicki Piersol

Stay so you can watch your children grow and thrive in a community you love. Stay so you can watch your son(s) walk the halls and play ball where you made your first mark in the sport you love. Stay so the community can continue to express their gratitude for all of the philanthropic things you do. Stay because no other city will love you like we do.

— Dawn Tallent

LeBron,

I hope you were serious about it being a “family” decision. Let your kids experience a small town feel and school like St. V.

You can go wherever you want but this will always be home.
