KANSAS CITY, Mo.: Michael Bourn isn't progressing as fast as he would like after sustaining a cut on his right index finger that required five stitches to close.

""I don't hink he's quite as comfortable as he wanted to be,'' manager Terry Francona said today. ""I grabbed him yesterday and told him that the DL is only an artificial timetable, and that he should come back when he is ready.''

The stitches were removed Thursday, and Bourn has been gradually getting used to baseball activity, taking dry swings and playing catch. He is eligible to come off the DL on Tuesday, but that won't happen.
