St. Vincent-St. Mary showed resiliency Saturday at Canal Park to record a dramatic win.

The Irish scored five runs in the final two innings to top rival Archbishop Hoban 6-5 on a walk-off single by junior Zacc Markulis that scored senior Jacob Connery with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

“Our guys have been resilient all year,” St. V-M coach Anthony Boarman said. “We had a comeback win on Thursday against CVCA. We scored five runs in the top of the seventh to beat them, and we had another game that we won in extra innings where we had to come back down four or five runs against Gilmour Academy.”

Junior Garrett Bischof, Connery and senior Jared Lloyd hit three one-out singles in a row in the seventh for St. V-M (8-5). Lloyd’s hit scored Bischof and junior Chris Schar walked before Markulis’ line single to center field with the bases loaded.

“We just stayed up and focused on the positives,” Markulis said. “We just kept that fire going that we talk about.”

Hoban (10-5) started Saturday with a 5-1 win over defending Division I state champion Jackson in the 14th Cancer Awareness Classic at Kent State’s Schoonover Stadium.

“Our kids played very, very hard,” said Patrick Swain, a 2007 Hoban graduate, who took over as the Knights’ coach a couple of weeks ago after Andy Capraruolo was removed as coach for an undisclosed reason.

“This is Game 2 of the day for us. We had a really good win today against Jackson at Kent. I think that took a little bit out of us and we were a little bit tired, but St. V also played very, very well. Coach Boarman does a good job with his crew over there.

“[Junior] Mack Timbrook, [senior] Ben Lefebvre, [junior] Mason Tipton, [junior] Isaiah Jackson and [senior] Jack Bennett contributed in that win over Jackson.”

Bennett, senior Dan Noe and junior Josh Lane pitched against Jackson.

St. V-M took a 1-0 lead over Hoban in the second when Connery scored on an error.

Timbrook hit an inside-the-park three-run home run in the third against St. V-M to give Hoban a 3-1 lead. Senior Jared Armsey led off the inning with a single and junior Nate Montecalvo was hit by pitch to set up Timbrook’s line drive to the wall in right-center field. Jackson then worked a walk, advanced to second on a ground out and scored when Bennett delivered a single to left field.

Hoban led 5-1 in the fourth when Timbrook hit a single to score Armsey.

St. V-M cut its deficit to 5-4 in the sixth. Connery led off with a single, Lloyd worked a walk and Schar hit a single to bring in Connery. Senior Scott Walter entered to run for Schar, Lloyd scored on a wild pitch, sophomore Jake Pentasuglio hit a single and senior Tyler Lattea lifted a sacrifice fly to score Walter.

“We are just a really hungry team,” Connery said as Irish teammates doused Boarman with a bucket of water.

Added Irish senior winning pitcher Jack Mullin: “I knew my guys were going to have my back today and I was going to have theirs. I knew we were all going to give it everything we had in my last Hoban game.”
