State tennis

Walsh Jesuit senior Aaron Sandberg advanced to the semifinals in Division I singles Friday in Columbus. Sandberg, who was second as a junior and third as a sophomore, is seeking his first state title. He will play Nathan Griffin of Cleveland St. Ignatius in the semifinals today.

Sandberg, a Brown University recruit, defeated Luke Tsai of Mason 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) in the first round and Charles Shewalter of Upper Arlington 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Jackson sophomore Joey Thomas defeated Bryan Yoshino of Dublin Coffman 6-2, 6-3 but was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Zach Berry of Springboro 6-1, 6-0.

The Copley doubles team of senior Andrew Ong and sophomore Gavin Aten defeated Tyler Holsopple and Chun Yang of Upper Arlington 6-1, 6-4 but lost in the quarterfinals to Nakul Narendran and Rajeev Laungani of Cincinnati Sycamore 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.

The Copley doubles team of seniors Matt Adzema and Nick Adzema lost 7-5, 6-1 to Nadim Boulos and Sean Reid of Mason.

The Jackson doubles team of sophomores Anthony Kanam and Jake Zalenski lost to Alex Lebedev and Young-Jin Kang of Mason 6-2, 7-5.

Track and field

Navarre Div. III regional

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls captured a regional championship with 78.33 points at Fairless High School.

Winning titles for the Knights were the 3,200-meter relay team of Athena Welsh, Danielle Palutsis, Kacee Soehnlen and Molly Pusateri (9:27.53), Welsh in the 1,600-meter run (5:12.73), Pusateri in the 800 (2:14.96), the 1,600-meter relay team of Pusateri, Kalee Soehnlen, Taylor Looby and Kacee Soehnlen (4:00.96).

Also taking individual titles were Katie Mokros of Canton Central Catholic in the 100-meter dash (12.58) and the 200 (25.88) and Maggie Poorman of Smithville in the 400 (57.42).

Canton Central Catholic finished in fifth place with 35 points.

Baseball

Orrville 8, Youngstown Ursuline 7

The Red Riders scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 7-3 deficit and capture the Massillon Division III regional championship.

The victory advances Orrville (18-11) to the state semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday at Huntington Park in Columbus.

Senior J.T. Perez had a double, single, two runs and four RBI, freshman Austin Dover had a double, single and two RBI, senior Chandler Smith had two doubles, two singles and scored two runs and senior Kyle Ritchie had a single and a double for Orrville.
