Northern Illinois’ 16-2 run in the first half was too much for Kent State to overcome and the Golden Flashes (5-13, 4-4) fell to the host Huskies 66-55 Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies (9-11, 3-5) scored first on Courtney Shelton’s 3-pointer two minutes into the game and held the lead until the final buzzer.
Itziar Llobet’s 3-pointer with 8:38 left in the game was the closest KSU came to tying the score in the second half. Llobet was the only player in double figures and led the team with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and five rebounds.
NIU outrebounded Kent State 39-22, including 10 offensive rebounds.
Shelton led the Huskies with 23 points, four rebounds and three assists.
KSU’s Jaime Hutchenson scored nine points while Diamon Beckford and Trisha Krewson each added eight.
Kent State recorded only four assists as a team.
