The Kent State University wrestling team suffered a 21-12 defeat to Central Michigan Sunday.

KSU fell to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference and CMU improved to 8-6 and 4-2.

Sophomore Michael DePalma (149 pounds) scored first for the Golden Flashes when he earned a 11-6 victory over Scott Mattingly. DePalma scored five takedowns and an impressive 2:45 in riding time.

Kent State looked like it would keep racking up the points when sophomore Ian Miller jumped out to a 4-1 over Luke Smith. An arm injury prevented Miller from continuing.

The highlight of the match came in the 184-pound class when sophomore Sam Wheeler fought back from a near-pin and a 6-0 deficit to earn a 9-8 victory.

Wheeler converted four takedowns, forced a stalling point and erased opponent Craig Kelliherís riding time to win.

Redshirt freshman Mimmo Lytle won in a 3-1 decision in the 285-pound class with a double-leg takedown.

Sophomore Cole Baxter also earned a victory at 197 pounds in a 5-1 decision.
