Boston Red Sox catcher and captain Jason Varitek, 39, has decided to retire, the Boston Globe reported Monday. He is expected to make it official Thursday at Boston’s spring training in Fort Myers, Fla.

Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland are among 13 players who have agreed to contracts for this season with the Texas Rangers. … The Kansas City Royals have signed catcher Salvador Perez to a five-year contract worth $7 million. … Eric Chavez and the New York Yankees have finalized a $900,000, one-year contract … The Reds have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with set-up man Sean Marshall, who could become the closer down the road. … Ryan Zimmerman’s contract with the Washington Nationals includes a five-year, $10 million personal services clause for when he finishes playing.

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, on ESPN Radio, called new manager Bobby Valentine’s ban on beer in the clubhouse a “PR move.”

Dodgers bidders

Seven groups of bidders for the Los Angeles Dodgers, including Magic Johnson and Stan Kroenke, will interview with baseball’s ownership committee on buying the bankrupt team by the end of April.
